Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ)

WHAT'S A WEB PAGE?
Consider a Web page as having approximately the amount of information
found on an 8.5" x 11" sheet of paper. Of course, a page can be
larger than this. When designing a strong Web page several elements
should be considered. First, the Web allows for the inclusion of
both text and graphic elements in full color, and it is always recommended
to balance the text of a site with compelling and relevant graphics
which feature products, sales information, company information,
etc. Our site packages are structured to meet a variety of objectives,
from a simple home page to an extensive e-commerce site.
CONTENT MATERIALS - WHAT FORM, WHAT KIND, RECOMMENDATIONS?
We can create Web sites using a wide range of materials. Artwork
and graphic images are a critical component of the interactive Web
environment. Do you currently have printed brochures, catalogues,
flyers, logos or illustrations/photos of your products? Those can
be provided to us electronically, on disk, or we can scan high quality
photographs, slides , or negatives and text.
WHAT ARE IMAGES?
Images are how a Web site comes to life. Images can be anything
from a corporate logo, pictures of products, graphs, charts or organizational
diagrams. We can scan and compress any type of image or if such
images can be provided to us in disk format or electronically, we
can process and integrate them into the Web site.
If you are sending us hard copy images, please
try to avoid textured papers and overly large images (posters, etc.).
We will adjust the images to achieve the fastest and highest integrity
of reproduction.
WHAT IS A FORM? CAN IT BE CUSTOMIZED?
A form is a mechanism for initiating dialogue with a visitor. They
allow you collect information about visitors to your Web site and
they let visitors request information.
CAN VISITORS PURCHASE MY MERCHANDISE AT THE
WEB SITE?
Yes. That is the ultimate goal of electronic commerce, to engage
potential customers into a purchase decision. By making the online
experience informative, relevant and easy to use, commerce is possible.
Keeping order processing simple and convenient is important. The
same rules and etiquette exercised with traditional purchases should
be mirrored on the Web. JRH Web Design & Hosting offers a Shopping
Cart and SSL/PGP for setting up ecommerce based Web sites.
SHOPPING CARTS
This order processing system allows a customer to select multiple
items while browsing the product offering pages of your Web site.
The items are "held" in the shopping cart until the visitor is ready
to "check out." When the visitor is ready to submit the order, all
items are listed, automatically totaled, and then sent in the form
of a secure encrypted e-mail to the Web site owner.
SSL AND PGP
SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer, and is the method used
for the securing of credit card information from the customer to
a secured server.
PGP is the method used for sending a customer's
encrypted credit card information from a secure server to your e-mail
account. PGP allows you to store and retrieve sensitive information
in an encrypted manner. PGP is military grade encryption which is
publicly available to U.S. residents through most of the common
e-mail programs, or from Network Associates. There is a good chance
that you already have PGP capabilities on your computer. More information
can be found here.
WHAT IS A WEB ADDRESS? A URL? A DOMAIN NAME?
URL stands for Universal Resource Locator. Put simply, it is a Web
site address, also called a domain name. For example, this site's
domain name is www.jrhwebdesign.com.
WHY DO I NEED A DOMAIN NAME OR SUBDOMAIN?
Your Web site will be located on the World Wide Web (WWW) for the
public to access via the Internet. Every Web site requires an address.
A domain or subdomain is the address to your Web site. Users type
the address in the location of their browser to get to your site.
As part of our design packages, we will promote and market your
address so your customers find out about it.
HOW DO I REGISTER A DOMAIN NAME?
Domain names ending with .com, .net or .org can be registered through
many different companies known as "registrars". An alphabetical
listing of these companies appears in the InterNIC
Registrar Directory. If you are uncomfortable doing this yourself,
we will register your domain for $19.95.
WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE A DOMAIN NAME REGISTERED?
If you have already registered a domain name and want to host your
Web site with JRH Web Design, the domain will need to be transfer
to our servers. We can help you do this or we can provide the necessary
information to redirect the URL to our servers.
WILL MY SITE BE REGISTERED WITH SEARCH ENGINES?
Upon launching your site to the Web, we will register the site with
the top search engines and directories.
WHAT IS WEB HOSTING?
Hosting is the term used to describe the storage and access of a
site to the Internet. The Internet is a federation of host computers
that are interconnected and able to "speak" with one another. JRH
Web Design & Hosting hosts all Web sites on our virtual servers.
This means that when someone types in your URL or accesses your
site through any search engine, they will be communicating with
our servers. Our servers will house the Web site and pull it up
upon command.
WHAT TYPE OF REPORTING DO YOU OFFER?
There are several ways to measure Web site activity to help quantify
some type of return on your Internet investment. All of our Web
site design packages include a free stats package. More detailed Web statistics are available to track
data of your Web site's activity including the number of hits by
day, week, month, and time of day, country of origin, visitor system
information and visitor referral information (how people found you).
All Web statistics are updated in real time.
WILL I HAVE FTP ACCESS TO MY SITE?
If you plan on maintaining your own site, FTP access will be made
available. Please contact Technical
Support if you need FTP access.
CAN I USE MICROSOFT FRONTPAGE TO CREATE MY
OWN WEB SITE?
